The fourth ACNS will be hosted by the Lujan Neutron Scattering Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and will be held in Santa Fe, New Mexico, May 12-15, 2008

The Neutron Scattering Society of America Announces Two New Scientific Prizes

The Neutron Scattering Society of America (NSSA) is pleased to announce two new scientific prizes to be awarded at the biennial American Conference on Neutron Scattering (ACNS):

The NSSA Sustained Research Prize
To recognize a sustained contribution to a scientific subfield, or subfields, using neutron scattering techniques.  Consideration will be given to the impact that the candidate's neutron scattering results have had on the subfield.  Preference will be given to applicants whose work was carried out predominantly in North America.  The prize consists of $2,500, a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient and a travel allowance to attend the corresponding NSSA sponsored American Conference on Neutron Scattering at which the prize is awarded.  The recipient will have an invited talk at the corresponding ACNS.

The NSSA Science Prize
To recognize a major scientific accomplishment or important scientific contribution within the last 5 years using neutron scattering techniques.

The Neutron Scattering Society also awards

The Clifford G. Shull Prize in Neutron Science
To recognize outstanding research in neutron science and leadership promoting the North American neutron scattering community in honor of Clifford G. Shull, who received the Nobel Prize in 1994 with Bert Brockhouse for seminal developments in the field of neutron science. Consideration shall be given to outstanding research accomplishments and contributions to the advancement of neutron science, including developing or supporting the North American neutron scattering community, through teaching, research, technical leadership and scientific writings. Preference shall be given to applicants whose work was carried out predominantly in North America. The Shull prize consists of a plaque and an honorarium of $5,000 to be presented at the American Conference on Neutron Scattering (ACNS). The recipient is expected to present an invited talk at the conference.  A stipend towards travel expenses to the conference will be paid in addition to the honorarium.

NSSA Hosts Exhibit of Neutron Centers at APS March Meeting

NSSA Exhibit at 2000 March APS Meeting

The NSSA was host to an exhibit booth at the American Physical Society March Meetings in 2000 - 2003 and 2005-2006.  The exhibit featured displays from the U.S. neutron scattering user centers and was intended to provide information and answer questions from present and potential users of the neutron facilities.

Gen Shirane Passes Away January 16, 2005

Gen Shirane, a giant in the field of neutron scattering, died suddenly on Sunday, January 16, 2005.  Gen had a 50-year career in neutron scattering, most of it working at Brookhaven's High Flux Beam Reactor.  He performed many seminal experiments and published more that 700 papers on a wide variety of topics ranging from ferroelectricity to low dimensional solids and High Tc.
A memorial tribute to Gen was held on Feb. 12, 2005 in the Physics Department's Seminar Room at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that  donations in Gen's name be sent to the Student Conservation Association, c/o H. Montgomery, PO Box 550, Charlestown, New Hampshire 03603-0550, an organization which provides volunteer conservation service opportunities to high school and college students.
